Prof. Dr. Anton Schnyder (born 1952) is Professor for private and commercial law, private international and civil procedure law, and comparative law at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. He further acts as President of the Federal Appeal Commission supervising private insurance.
He graduated from law school with mention “magna cum laude” (1978) and completed his doctorate degree with mention “summa cum laude” (1981) at this university. His doctoral thesis was awarded the Professor-Walther-Hug Prize. In 1982, and with a full grant from the Fulbright scholarship, he was conferred a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree at the University of California in Berkeley Law School (Boalt Hall). After several teaching assignments and a research fellowship at the Max-Planck-Institute for Foreign and Private International Law in Hamburg, Germany (1984-1987), Prof. Schnyder completed his habilitation thesis at the University of Zurich in 1990.
Previous to his present position, he clerked at the District Court of Zurich (1982-1993) and acted as corporate legal adviser to the general secretariat of the Zurich insurance group (1987-1993), including from January 1992 in the capacity of member of the management. During the summer term 1993, he held the Jean-Monnet-Professorship for European and International Commercial Law at the University of Bielefeld, Germany, before becoming full professor for private law at the University of Basel in 1993.
