Prof. Dr. iur. Mark Pieth (Basel Institute on Governance)

Mark Pieth is Professor of Criminal Law and Criminology at the University of Basel, Switzerland and is the Chairman of the Basel Institute on Governance. He has published extensively in the field of economic and organised crime, money laundering, corruption, sanctioning and criminal procedure, providing cross-cutting analyses of challenges to the rule of law, and is internationally considered to be a leading author in the area of global governance, in particular with regard to self-regulatory processes of standard-setting.

Prof. Donald de Savigny (Swiss Tropical Institute)

Don de Savigny is an epidemiologist and public health specialist. He is currently Head of the Health Systems Interventions Unit in the Department of Public Health and Epidemiology at the Swiss Tropical Institute, University of Basel. He is also an Honorary Professor and former Heath Clark Lecturer at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He currently sits on a number of advisory panels including Chair of the Health Metrics Network Technical Advisory Group, Chair of the WHO Roll Back Malaria Working Group on Scalable Malaria Vector Control, the Scientific Advisory Committee for the INDEPTH Network of Demographic and Health Observatories, the WHO African Malaria Expert Committee, the Gates Malaria Partnership Expert Oversight Committee, Board of Directors for HealthBridge Canada, and the Council for Health Research for Development.  His current research focuses on interventions to strengthen health systems in developing countries, and on the health system effects of Global Health Initiatives for scaling up access.

Kaspar Wyss, PD, PhD, MPH (Swiss Tropical Institute)

Kaspar Wyss is associate professor at the University of Basel and holds a doctoral degree in epidemiology and a Master in Public Health. Amongst other research and implementation projects of the Swiss Tropical Institute, he directs the “Tajik-Swiss Health Reform and Family Medicine Support Project” and various other projects in Eastern Europe and Africa (e.g. Cameroon). He is overseeing the implementation of programs financed by the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria (GFATM) in countries where STI acts as Local Fund Agent. His research interests focus on successful approaches to strengthening health service delivery and the role and importance of managerial, policy and governance processes as well as health workforce development. Within the NCCR North-South on Mitigating Syndromes of Global Change he helds a senior research position thereby focusing research activities on innovative approaches to health service development and human resource related issues.

Claudia Baez-Camargo

Claudia Baez-Camargo, who is lead researcher in the project, holds a PhD in political science and a graduate degree in economics. Before joining the project she was professor of political science and history at William Paterson University in the US. Her professional experience also includes work with the Mexican federal government in developing poverty alleviation programs as well as research activities with the UN’s Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean. Her research interests focus on the interrelation of political and economic processes in developing countries with a strong emphasis on methodological issues.

Eelco Jacobs

Eelco Jacobs holds an MSc in State, Society and Development from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London. Before joining the project Eelco worked as a freelance analyst and consultant on public and global governance for thinktanks, NGOs and multilateral organisations in Britain, Tanzania and the Netherlands.  He also has experience from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe in Kyrgyzstan, working on anti-corruption projects and the International Labour Organisation, tracking the implementation of the One UN reforms. His current research interests include the enhancement of accountability mechanisms to counter corruption in Tajikistan’s health system.

Inez Mikkelsen-Lopez

Inez Mikkelsen-Lopez holds a Master in Health Economics from the University of
Queensland, Australia. Prior to joining the team at Basel, she worked as a
Junior Professional Associate in the Health, Nutrition and Population Unit at
the World Bank based in Washington DC. Her work experience has also included an
internship at the Thai Ministry of Health, working on estimating child mortality
trends by income status using census data. Her research interests are in
reducing inequalities in access to health care, improving health information
systems and in general, enhancing the efficiencies of health systems.

The team is support by Lucy Koechlin, who is responsible for the coordination of the project, and Anne Lugon-Moulin, who is responsible for the financial supervision of the project.
