Project Description: The Governance of Health Systems in Tanzania

The Basel Institute on Governance and the Swiss Tropical Institute (University of Basel) are conducting a joint interdisciplinary research project on the “The Governance of Health Systems”, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF). The key objectives of the research project are, firstly, the elaboration of an analytical and methodological framework to capture key dimensions of the governance of health systems; and, secondly, to apply and test the analytical framework in Tanzania and Tajikistan, and to advance the understanding of the governance of health systems in low‐income economies. The research project will be conducted in cooperation with partners from Southern and Eastern Africa and Central Asia.

PhD Position:

The PhD – candidate will take part in developing the analytical framework of the governance of health systems, conduct field research in Tanzania, and contribute to the overall findings of the research project. They will work closely with the interdisciplinary research team in Basel and in the partner countries. The candidate will be under direct supervison of the senior researcher of the project. The candidate will be based at the Basel Institute on Governance and the Law Faculty, University of Basel. The position is funded for 50% over a duration of three years (January 2009‐December 2011), with the possibility of increasing the position. Salaries are according to the guidelines of the SNF.

Requirements:

  • Completed Masters degree (or equivalent) in a field relevant to governance (sociology, political science, law, public administration, or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated knowledge on theories or dimensions of governance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge on transitional and / or low‐income countries.
  • Strong interpersonal competence and ability to work in different cultural contexts.
  • Interest in development work.
  • Interest in Eastern Africa and knowledge of Kiswahili considered an asset.
