Prof Mark Pieth, President and Founder of the Basel Institute on Governance, has been awarded the 2007 Integrity Award by the leading international NGO anti-corruption coalition Transparency International. There is a growing awareness that funds embezzled by corrupt officials must be recovered for the countries that have been victimized. While there are significant challenges to such efforts, recent developments, e.g. the return of USD 84 mio in confiscated bribery funds to Kazakhstan, are encouraging. Two consecutive meetings in Basel promoted coordination among international donor efforts in this regard and to identify reform needs in North and South to further improve the success rate in asset recovery. At a conference organised by the Academy of European Law (ERA) and the Basel Institute on Governance on 1-2 February in Trier, Germany, experts discussed how corruption can be combated more effectively at an international level. A conference organised by the Academy of European Law (ERA) and the Basel Institute on Governance on 1-2 February in Trier, Germany, will discuss how international cooperation in combating corruption can be improved.
