Sergio Jiménez Niño joined the Basel Institute on Governance in October 2019 as an Asset Recovery/Criminal Law Specialist based in the Basel Institute's regional office in Peru. He is a licensed lawyer from the Universidad Nacional Pedro Ruiz Gallo in Peru, holding Master degrees in criminal law and criminal procedure, as well as in civil and commercial law. 

In his current position, Sergio provides technical assistance in asset recovery cases to criminal justice authorities in Peru and Ecuador. He particularly supports ICAR’s partner institutions in the designing of investigative strategies, the drafting of confiscation and mutual legal assistance requests, as well as in the analysis of financial records. 

Prior to joining the Basel Institute, Sergio worked as a prosecutor of the public prosecutor’s office in Lima, where he specialised in corruption cases. He was also one of the first prosecutors to ever recover assets through non-conviction based confiscation in Peru. 

Apart from his work at the Basel Institute, Sergio is teaching postgraduate courses at the Universidad Nacional Pedro Ruiz Gallo de Lambayeque in Peru. He is a regular contributor to academic journals for criminal law such as Gaceta Penal, Procesal Penal and Actualidad Penal.
