Dr Sergio Jiménez joined the Basel Institute on Governance in July 2023 as a Senior Specialist, Asset Recovery.

A lawyer by profession, from 2019–2023 Sergio was leader of the asset recovery workstream in the Subnational Public Finance Management Strengthening programme (Programa GFP Subnacional), which the Basel Institute implements in Peru.

He worked to strengthen the capacity of the Peruvian justice system by providing technical assistance and training activities on “extinción de dominio”, a form of non-conviction based asset recovery. As Deputy Provincial Prosecutor of the Public Prosecutor's Office in Peru, Sergio was involved in the landmark investigations into the transnational corruption of Odebrecht.

Sergio is also a lecturer in Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at the Pedro Ruiz Gallo National University of Lambayeque, where he obtained his undergraduate degree. His Master's degree is in Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure and Civil and Commercial Law and he is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of San Martín de Porres.
